چکیده

We present the K-band spectrum of the cataclysmic variable RXJ 0502.8+1624 (Tau 4). The spectrum shows a broad, smooth hump, with no absorption lines from the secondary star visible. This result indicates that the infrared light of this system is dominated by cyclotron emission, and, in combination with the optical spectrum and X-ray properties, suggests that Tau 4 is a polar-type cataclysmic variable (CV). The system was chosen for study because the broadband JHK colours of Tau 4 are consistent with an L-type dwarf, suggesting that this system might harbour an elusive sub-stellar secondary star. The result presented here, along with the recent discovery of cyclotron emission in the cataclysmic variable EF Eri, suggests that care must be taken when using the broadband JHK colours of CVs when targeting searches for sub-stellar secondary stars.

Near - Infrared Spectroscopy of the Cool Brown Dwarf , SDSS 1624 + 00

Using the Subaru Telescope, we have obtained multiple near-infrared spectra of the cool brown dwarf, SDSS 1624+00 (J162414.37+002915.8), in search of spectral variability in an 80 minute time span. We have found the suspected variability of water vapor absorption throughout the observations, which requires confirmation with a longer time baseline. After coadding the spectra, we have obtained a ...

On the new short orbital period cataclysmic variable H α 0242 - 2802 ⋆

We present results from our phase-resolved spectroscopy of the newly identified cataclysmic variable Hα0242-2802. Hα0242-2802 was identified from a deep UK Schmidt Hα-R band survey as a candidate cataclysmic variable. Although initial spectroscopy revealed an optical spectrum very similar to that of the famous short orbital period system WZ Sge, the analysis of our data shows that this is not t...

On the use of CO/CO as a test of common-envelope evolution

We present K-band echelle spectra of the cataclysmic variable SS Cyg and the pre-cataclysmic variable V471 Tau in order to measure the strengths of the CO and CO bands at 2.3525 and 2.3448 μm, respectively, and so perform the observational test of the common-envelope model of close binary star evolution proposed by Sarna et al. (1995). Although we find evidence of an absorption feature coincide...

The new cataclysmic variable RX J1554.2+2721 in the period gap

We report on the results of a spectroscopic and photometric study of a new cataclysmic variable, identified as optical counterpart of the X-ray source RXJ1554.2+2721 detected by ROSAT. The spectroscopic observations of the relatively bright (∼ 16. 5) object show systematic radial velocity variations with a semiamplitude of ∼140 km/sec. Besides the clear presence of distinct low and high states ...

Chandra DISCOVERY OF AN INTERMEDIATE POLAR IN BAADE’S WINDOW

We have discovered an intermediate polar (IP) in the 100 ks Chandra observation of Baade’s Window (BW), a low extinction region at about 4 south of the Galactic Center. The source exhibits large X-ray modulations at a period of 1028.4 s in the 0.3 – 8 keV band. The X-ray spectral fit with a power law model shows the integrated spectrum is intrinsically hard (photon index, Γ = 0.44 ± 0.05) and m...
